CMCRI mediates in...

Communities

We have resolved cases related to neighborhood tensions, lifestyle differences, street noise, housing disputes, marital and child custody issues, consumer complaints and racial, ethnic and gender discrimination. CMCRI volunteers have mediated hundreds of cases and obtained agreements in 70% of them.

School

We teach peer mediation and conflict resolution skills to students, teachers, administrators and parents. In 2001-2002, student mediators helped their peers resolve more than 85% of the 300 incidents of bullying, name-calling and similar student disputes.

Courts

CMCRI volunteers mediate small claims cases in the Providence, Newport, Washington and Kent District Courts and landlord-tenant issues in the Providence Housing Court. Our volunteer mediators handle more than 300 cases per year, with a 70% settlement rate. Research shows that parties prefer mediation and that compliance rates for mediated agreements are significantly higher than those decided by a judge.

Fees

All of CMCRI’s mediation services are either free or charged on a sliding scale based on income.  No client will be turned away due to an inability to pay.
